Environmental Programme

For a long time, environmental issues have been taken into account in FINCIS’s practical activities. FINCIS’s Environmental Programme 2023–2026 introduces a comprehensive and systematic environmental perspective. The Environmental Programme is particularly focused on the issues that can be influenced nationally and internationally within the framework of the Anti-Doping Rules and standards.

The biggest environmental load imposed by FINCIS’s activities is related to travel, so the Environmental Programme emphasises the reduction of emissions caused by travel. FINCIS’ Environmental Programme has been prepared using WWF Finland’s Climate Calculator service.

With its Environmental Programme, FINCIS wants to both develop its own activities and, by setting an example, encourage other sports stakeholders.

Objectives of the Environmental Programme:

  • We improve the environmental sustainability of our own operations.
  • We encourage other sports stakeholders in the sports community to take better account of environmental issues.
  • We influence the international anti-doping community to encourage better account for environmental issues in future codes and standards as well as in operations.

The programme outlines measures to be taken in order to achieve the objectives. The programme has been designed by FINCIS staff. An environmental responsibility group is set up among the staff, and this group is responsible for implementation, monitoring and updating the programme, and leading the work of making the environmental programme visible in FINCIS’s choices and daily activities.

Development measures 2023–26

The development measures of the Environmental Programme have been selected by FINCIS staff. Realistic and measurable measures are emphasized. Although travel causes the greatest environmental load, smaller everyday choices can also affect the environmental load of operations.

Examples of development measures:

  • When making purchases, travel or accommodation choices, refer to the Checklist for Environmentally Responsible Procurements.
  • When organising events, refer to the Checklist for Environmentally Sustainable Events.
  • Raise environmental sustainability in discussion in international influencing situations.
  • Take advantage of remote opportunities, for example, through remote work and meetings. Remote work reduces the daily carbon footprint of commuting.
  • Encourage commuting by bike and use of public transport. When driving, prefer the most low-emission options.
  • Use electricity from renewable sources.
  • Obtain more detailed information on, for example, the water and electricity consumption of the office. Lowering the office temperature in the winter and using lights equipped with a motion sensor can reduce electricity consumption.
